You’ve been together for a while now, and you know that you want to stick together for the long haul.  For as long as weddings have existed, so too has there been courtship, engagement and proposals.
It’s true that love and marriage are founded on friendship and trust, but romance soars to new heights with a single, romantic gesture.  Ask any bride and she’ll be able to tell you where her husband popped the big question.  And we are lucky to have some of the most romantic locations in Victoria to make such lasting memories!
It doesn’t matter what your personal taste, there is something for everyone – beaches, mountains, animals and man-made attractions all make our list of the top 10 places to propose in Victoria.

  1. Mornington Peninsula

The first location on our list of top 10 places to propose in Victoria is an old favourite, and absolutely fool-proof! The Mornington Peninsula has so many wonderful scenic spots that you’re sure to find something that gives your proposal that extra edge.  There are beautiful sandy foreshores in townships like Safety Beach, Rye, Sorrento and Portsea (and all those in between), as well as the stunnings heights of Arthurs Seat.  Alternatively, you can visit some of the most beautiful wineries in the state, or have a relaxing weekend at Peninsula Hot Springs.  Whatever you choose, taking a drive down the Mornington Peninsula will lead you to proposal heaven!

2. Dandenong Ranges

If you are looking for picturesque, then look no further.  The Dandenong Ranges are as romantic as they are relaxing!  Check into a gorgeous B&B cottage, or have a meal to remember at one of the many cosy, top-rated restaurants.  And if you are looking for the best views in the area, take a drive to Sky High or one of the other many amazing lookouts in the Dandenongs.

3. Eureka Skydeck

Take advantage of sweeping views and dizzying heights at Eureka Skydeck, on the 99th floor of Southbank’s Eureka Tower.  Projecting from the skydeck is The Edge, a glass cube that gives you full vantage, seemingly suspended 300 metres above the ground.  This breathtaking experience will make for a very memorable proposal!

Yarra Valley

4. Yarra Valley

This iconic wine region is next on our list of top 10 places to propose in Victoria, and is one of the prettiest areas in the state.  Warburton, Lilydale, Coldstream and Healesville are all a flush with greenery and colour.  The Yarra Valley is home to some of the best wines you’ll ever sip, such as De Bortoli, Domain Chandon, Rochford Wines and Balgownie Estate.  Many of these locations have their own venues and accommodation, making them the ideal proposal destination.  If you’re not into wine, take advantage of the brilliant local produce and award-winning eateries in the area, or check out the local markets.  Maybe even try proposing after a thrilling skydive experience!  The Yarra Valley is also the perfect starting point for a spot of hot air ballooning, which is undoubtedly a super-romantic way to pop the question!

5. Daylesford & Hepburn Springs

Located northeast of Ballarat, Daylesford and Hepburn Springs boast relaxing mineral springs, historic homesteads and lovely gardens.  Hepburn Springs itself has the highest concentration of mineral springs in Australia, and is known as a resort town.  Here you’ll find some of the country’s best B&B’s, resorts and day spas.  If you are partial to spoiling your significant other, or getting the luxury treatment yourself, you should definitely consider this area when it comes to sealing your relationship with a diamond!

Grampians National Park

6. Grampians National Park

The Grampians is a huge national park located in Western Victoria.  The heritage-listed park is one of the richest sites for indigenous rock art, natural beauty and impressive rock formations.  Popular areas in The Grampians are Falls Gap (also home to one of Victoria’s longest-running food and wine festivals) and The Balconies.  The Balconies is a popular and not-to-strenuous walk, with panoramic views of the scenic surrounds.  A perfect place to get away and ask for your loved one’s hand in marriage.

7. Locations for Animal Lovers – Melbourne Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary and Werribee’s Open Range Zoo

We’ve looked at a lot of picturesque and typically romantic locations in our top 10 places to propose in Victoria, but what if you want something a little more exciting?  Well, animals always impress.  Victoria has some of the best zoos and animal sanctuaries in the country!  You can visit Melbourne Zoo for something more traditional – perhaps time it with the popular Twilight Jazz concerts that have been held over Summer at the Zoo for decades.  Werribee’s Open Range Zoo is great for those seeking a more immersive experience.  And if you want a more rustic, natural setting, head to Healesville Sanctuary.  There are other great proposal options for animal lovers, including The Melbourne Aquarium, Ballarat Wildlife Park, and Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park in Pearcedale.

From the stunning sands of Torquay, to the heritage harbour town of Portland, the Great Ocean Rd will not disappoint.  The hardest part will be picking one spot to drop on one knee and pop the question!  With Anglesea, the 12 Apostles, the romantic Aireys Inlet, seafood-loving Apollo Bay, and the sea forest of the Otways, you’ll want to propose at every stop to take full advantage of the scenery!

9. Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens

We’ll move away from the sand, lights and natural forest areas for a moment, and look at Melbourne’s own big backyard.  Such a simple, yet often overlooked location, these beautiful gardens have been astounding Victorians and visitors since 1846.  They are easy to get to via public transport, and have an abundance of exquisite flora to look at, hide under and get lost in.  Find your favourite backdrop and ask your big question surrounded by colour and sunset.  Then, once the formalities are over, you can head into the CBD and celebrate in true Melbourne style well into the night.
